My son was born hyperactive, he came out riding a bicycle and he couldn’t stop unless medicated. Later in life, he remained thin, he could eat anything, any quantity of food, and he didn’t gain an ounce. As a matter of fact, he is a big eater. On the other hand, one of my daughters easily puts on the pounds, and she must be careful about what she eats, how much, and she exercises rigorously to maintain her figure. The simple conclusion is that our metabolic rates vary according to inherited genetic dispositions. Some burn food rapidly for energy, and some do not. We need to work with what we have been given: genetically, environmentally, and psychologically.
Obesity is defined as a state of being more than twenty percent above normal weight, or having a body fat percentage greater than thirty percent for women, and twenty five percent for men. There are scales that use bioelectrical impedance (resistance) as measures of body fat percentages. They look like normal digital scales but are somewhat more expensive.
Of course there are many theories on obesity. The physiological theories are tied to brain serotonin levels (a neurotransmitter that regulates mood), diet-induced thermogenesis (the physiological process of heat production in the body), the activity of the sympathetic nervous system (the fight or flight autonomic nervous system), the metabolism of fat cells, and sensitivity to the hormone insulin (a hormone secreted by the pancreas that promotes glucose use, protein synthesis, the formation and storage of neutral lipids, and is used for the treatment of diabetes).
There are many dietary measures of considerable importance. For example, a diet high in tryptophan leads to higher levels of serotonin in the brain which can promote weight loss. Additionally, one of the key goals to enhance weight loss is to better regulate blood sugar levels by increasing the sensitivity of cells throughout the body to the hormone insulin. It is known that when the body is taxed by introduction to too much sugar in the diet, insulin receptors over time become less sensitive to insulin. Therefore, decreased insulin sensitivity leads to higher levels of blood sugar.
Fiber supplements have been shown to enhance blood sugar control and the effects of insulin, as well as actually reducing the number of calories absorbed by the body. Chromium supplementation has been demonstrated to lower body weight and increase insulin sensitivity.
Many other practical approaches to obesity have been discussed in the literature, from use of medium chain triglycerides, hydroxycitrate, CoQ10 …etc.
Now, in obesity we must consider that food energy is stored instead of being converted to heat; and once again, a major factor contributing to decreased thermogenesis in overweight people in insulin insensitivity- that could lead to diabetes type II.
We must ask, “How can we reset the set point in overweight individuals, i.e. control the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. This means we need to regulate the tonicity of our nervous systems. We must consider the amount of brown fat in the cells, which are genetically provided. Most fat in the body is white fat. But, brown fat cells are special fat cells that contain multiple compartments instead of the one big compartment in white fat. The triglycerides in brown fat cells are localized in smaller droplets that surround numerous energy producing compartments known as mitochondria. An over extensive blood vessel network along with a greater density of mitochondria (the energy producing engines of cells) gives the tissue its brown color, and the greater ability to burn fat.
It appears that my son has a greater number of brown fat cells than my daughter, giving him the greater capability for thermogenesis; and to easily remain thin.
Let’s consider the individual who is already overweight. Insulin receptors have already been decreased in sensitivity, and it’s harder to derive energy for life’s challenges without eating…too much! Because, food energy is stored instead of being converted to heat. The reason is the following: your nervous system’s “tonicity” has been affected by chronic overeating, and depression has been the result. Depression, from a biophysical point of view, has caused the brain’s magnetic field profile to be dampened, and the neuro-endocrine balance established between the brain and adrenal glands has been disrupted. Your adrenaline levels have been lowered significantly, and your sympathetic nervous system’s response in life has been altered. Thus, your energy level is usually too low, unless you eat more and more…until you can feel like you can cope with stressors of life. More specifically, it is likely that, initially, your hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis) was up regulated with a down regulation of its negative feedback controls. A hormone CRF is initially hyper secreted from the hypothalamus and induces the secretin of the hormone ACTH from the pituitary (the master gland).
ACTH causes an increase in cortisol (the stress hormone) from the adrenal glands; a release of cortisol from the bloodstream causes elevation of blood glucose. The negative feedback control of cortisol (overtime) to the hypothalamus (containing the appetite center of the brain) is impaired.
This causes a chain reaction, with cortisol receptors being desensitized; and this leads to increased activity of the agents that cause inflammation and disturbances in neurotransmitters.
Serotonin is reduced as a result of prolonged stress as well as reduction of sympathetic nervous system controls. Thus, it is increasingly more difficult to reduce your food intake to establish functional energy levels.
